My movers missed the delivery date. What are my rights?
On an interstate move, the mover must deliver on the agreed date or within the period written on the bill of lading. If a delay comes up, it must tell you as soon as it knows and give you the new dates in writing. Federal rules only excuse a missed date for force majeure, which means events truly outside the mover's control.
If the delay is the mover's fault and you pay extra costs, such as a hotel, meals or rented furniture, you may be able to recover them with a delay claim. Keep every receipt. File the claim in writing and state a dollar amount, the same way you would for damage.
If you paid for guaranteed service, your bill of lading should list any daily penalty the mover owes you. If a mover misses agreed dates without proper notice, FMCSA lists that as a complaint you can file.
