Where do I file a complaint against a moving company?
For an interstate move, file with FMCSA's National Consumer Complaint Database at nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov. You can also call 1-888-368-7238, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. A complaint can trigger a federal investigation, but FMCSA can't recover money for you or settle your claim.
Your state attorney general can also enforce federal moving rules. For a move within one state, contact your state's consumer protection office or the state agency that licenses movers. In New York, that is the Department of Transportation. In Massachusetts, it is the Department of Public Utilities.
If you think it was a scam, also report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to local police. Before filing anywhere, put your complaint to the mover in writing and keep a copy.
