Do I need shipping bolts to move a washer?
For a front-loader, yes, the makers recommend it. Whirlpool and Samsung both say to put the shipping bolts back in before a move. They hold the drum still so the suspension isn't damaged. Whirlpool recommends having a technician install them.
Take them out again at the new home. If you don't, Whirlpool says the washer won't run and will shake badly.
For a top-loader, Whirlpool says: turn off the faucets, disconnect and drain the hoses, and put them in the basket. Put the foam packing ring back in, or fill the gap with towels or blankets, then tape the lid shut.
Move every washer upright. If it's freezing out, follow the winter storage steps in the manual first, so water left inside can't freeze.
