Can I move a propane tank in my car or rental truck?

Federal hazmat rules don't cover people moving their own things for personal use, even in a rented truck. That doesn't make it safe, and many rental agreements ban propane. Read yours.

Fire marshals say: carry a filled tank upright, on the floor of the vehicle, with the windows open. Never in a car's trunk. Take it out as soon as you arrive, and never leave it in a parked vehicle. Heat raises the pressure inside.

Don't pack it in the cargo box with everything else. A closed truck in the sun is exactly the hot, airless space fire officials warn about.

If you smell gas, move away from the vehicle and call 911.
