How do I ship my car safely when I move?
Find out whether you're dealing with a broker or a carrier. A broker only arranges the shipment, and a carrier actually hauls the car. FMCSA says to be careful with any website that doesn't clearly say which one it is.
Every auto transport broker and carrier operating between states must be registered with FMCSA. Both have an MC number, and carriers also have a USDOT number. Look the number up in FMCSA's search before you pay, and avoid any company that doesn't show its MC number.
Get these answers in writing: Who is the actual carrier? What is the pickup window? What happens to your deposit if no truck is assigned? What cargo insurance does the carrier carry? Answers vary by company. Watch your card statement so only the amount you approved is charged.
If something goes wrong, file a complaint with FMCSA online or at 1-888-368-7238.
