Do the federal moving rules apply to a local move in my state?
Mostly, no. FMCSA rules cover interstate moves. A move between two places in the same state also counts as interstate if the truck passes through another state. A move that stays inside one state follows that state's rules, and they differ a lot from state to state.
To check a local mover, contact your state or local consumer affairs office, or the agency that licenses movers. Confirm the mover's license, local address and insurance.
Protections you may have heard about, like the 110% cap at delivery, are federal rules. They may not apply in your state, so ask your state agency what does. The NAIC notes that a mover's basic coverage is often about 30 cents per pound on in-state moves. Get the rate, the estimate type and the payment terms in writing.
