Why isn't my mail being forwarded after I moved?

Forwarding often takes a week or more to start. Check your change-of-address start date and the confirmation letter USPS mailed to your new address. A typo in either address, or a request filed under one person when the mail is addressed to the whole household, often causes problems. If you got a confirmation you didn't request, contact USPS right away. It can be a sign of fraud.

Forwarding has limits. First-Class Mail is forwarded for 12 months, but magazines and newspapers only for about 60 days. Some items aren't forwarded at all, including some marketing mail. UPS, FedEx, and Amazon deliveries don't go through your forwarding order.

If forwarded mail stops or goes missing, contact your new local post office, then file a Missing Mail search on usps.com. Most importantly, change your address directly with banks, the IRS, Social Security, insurers, and doctors. Forwarding is a temporary backup.
