How do I change my address with the IRS and Social Security?
Don't count on a post office change of address reaching the IRS. The IRS gives four ways to update it: put your new address on your next tax return, mail Form 8822, send a signed letter with your name, old and new addresses, and SSN, or call. If you filed jointly, include both spouses. Allow about 45 days for the change to process. Not all post offices forward government checks, so update the IRS directly.
For Social Security, sign in to your free my Social Security account at ssa.gov. Go to My Profile, then Contact, and enter your new address and the date it takes effect. People who get retirement, survivor, or disability benefits can do this online.
If you get SSI, or you don't have a U.S. mailing address, you can't change your address online. Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit a Social Security office. Report the move promptly, because the change can affect SSI payments.
