Should I tow my car on a dolly or a car trailer?
Start with your car's owner's manual. Look under "towing" to see whether the car can ride with two wheels on the ground. A dolly lifts only two wheels. Kia's manual, for example, says a two-wheel-drive car can be towed with two tires on the ground, as long as the driven wheels are the ones lifted.
If the manual doesn't allow two wheels on the ground, use a car trailer, which carries all four. Check this especially if the car is all-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Towing changes how the truck drives. NHTSA says to practice before you take main roads, leave much more room to stop, and take turns wider, because trailer wheels cut inside and can hit curbs. Keep your speed moderate, since sway gets worse as you go faster.
Cross the safety chains under the tongue. Give them enough slack to turn, but not so much that they drag.
